Developing as a Professional Educator
Professional Goal
Since I will always be seeking ways to engage and support all students, my most passionate professional goal that I plan to achieve this coming school year (and constantly refine), is incorporating the principles of Universal Design for Learning into my curriculum for next year and beyond.
Actions to Meet My Goal
The actions I will take to attain my goal is by utilizing the IRIS Center's Universal Design for Learning modules to revisit the concepts and criteria I learned in my credential program to develop activities and projects for my incoming 6th grade students. I plan to collaborate with my RSP who has already worked with this cohort of students. This will provide me with an understanding of their current interests, needs and preferences. I will consistently assess my goal attainment when my students are successfully engaging in the activities that my RSP and I have developed for them.
How I Will Remain a Connected Educator
I will remain connected as an educator by never forgetting the little kid wonder! I will fully engage in the professional development opportunities that my school provides for me and I will seek out opportunities, with an emphasis in my interests or areas that I know I need to develop so I can better support my students. I will pursue opportunities to connect with other educators, from all phases of their careers, so I can get/give encouragement, tips and inspiration to persevere!
My Advice to New Teachers
Take time everyday to meditate and connect with your passion for teaching.
The challenges that you will face will require to refresh the determination that you had while you were going through your credentialing program. Connecting with your innate wisdom and courage will help you to self-reflect and take the correct course of action each day. It will also support you in renewing your passion for your work. I promise!
Take time everyday to exercise and prepare healthy meals.
You will be ridiculously busy, so you must take excellent care of your health by exercising your precious body and eating a healthy, nutritious diet. Treat yourself to a healthy meal prep service for the first year, if you can spare the cash. It will be worth it to your overall health.
Be a positive influence on your team.
It is human nature to complain, but complaining too much really can squash your good fortune. Use your wisdom when venting with your colleagues. Make sure you are in a "safe space" and allow for others to have a "safe space" to vent as well. Once you have had your venting session, make sure to support one another in coming up with a plan to take positive steps to transform the situation and create value for everyone involved.
NEVER GIVE UP!
You will have days when you feel as if you are not making any headway at all, persevere anyway. A breakthrough is coming soon, I promise you!
REMEMBER John Dewey: "Education is life itself!"
NEVER forget the little kid wonder!
Delve into your work and your experiences with a sense of wonder and seeking spirit. The more you engage with this determination, you will always feel creative, inspired and ready to tackle some of the inevitable challenges you will face as an educator.
